Today is my stop on the blog tour for the incredibly tasty The Ice Cream Parlour by Isabella May! Many thanks to Isabella and Rachel at Rachels Random Resources for providing me with a copy of the book for review.
Giovanna Tonioli is a successful stockbroker with a famous sports star boyfriend, but things aren’t as sweet as they seem. When life in the city of Bath goes from Vanilla to Rocky Road, she takes herself off to Italy for an ‘Eat Pray Love’ style tour of all things gelateria. What she doesn’t expect to find on her travels is one smooth, hot dollop of temptation that she just can’t shake.
How will her spiteful twin sister react when Giovanna returns to open a rival ice cream parlour? Will Natalia get her just desserts? Or will things become even stickier? All’s fair in love, war and ice cream. Isn’t it?
*Marian Keyes meets Paulo Coelho meets Nigella*
The Ice Cream Parlour is a mouthwatering tale of fate, family, love and jealousy – with a delectable drizzle of alchemy besides.
Having read Isabella Mays previous books (Which are all just as fantastic as this latest addition!) I thought I would be well prepared; Mays writing is notorious for both making me very hungry and giving me a serious dose of wanderlust.
I was not prepared.
The vivid descriptions of the gorgeous Italian backdrops, along with the irresistible gelato flavours being mentioned, had me searching the depths of my freezer as well as wistfully scrolling through travel sites. Having been to Italy once before, this book transported me straight back to the streets of Rome and every single gelateria I’d set foot in whilst I was there.
Following Giovanna, we not only get to experience the length and breadth of Italy in all it’s beauty, but also the island of Sicily and the city of Bath in the UK. Tasty gelato flavours aside, this book is filled with drama; from lost love to new found flames, bitter sibling rivalry and family ties being cut, missions of revenge and underground dealings. After 10 years of seemingly smooth sailing with her rugby star boyfriend, poor Giovannas life is turned on it’s head and she’s left wondering what it really is she wants out of life.
Born and raised behind the counter of her Fathers own gelato shop, the makings of the tasty Italian dessert seemed to run in Giovannas blood, prompting her to open her own store, boldly boasting it’s 100 unique flavours, all carefully planned and curated on her soul searching trip in her home land. Never mind that this new Ice Cream Parlour is in direct competition with her families little home-grown shop. It’s only a matter of time before Giovannas path crosses once more with her embittered twins’, Natalia. Gi’s popular business has definitely become a thorn in the side for her family, but they’re not the only ones keen to see her fail, and soon become the least of Giovannas worries.
There’s a vibrant cast of characters in this book, from Giovannas dedicated best friend Kelly, who’s all about the latest alternative therapy and detoxing tea, to the charming yet unruly Luca, whom Gi stumbles upon whilst exploring the northern Italian city of Milan. I loved every minute of this book, reading it one handed as I was (Well, the other hand was holding a spoon loaded with ice cream!), and finishing it has left me with not just a craving for travel and gelato, but for Isabella May to get another book written, pronto!
About The Author
Isabella May lives in (mostly) sunny Andalucia, Spain with her husband, daughter and son, creatively inspired by the sea and the mountains. Having grown up on Glastonbury’s ley lines however, she’s unable to completely shake off her spiritual inner child, and is a Law of Attraction fanatic.
Cake, cocktail, gelato, and travel obsessed, she also loves nothing more than to (quietly) break life’s ‘rules’.
The Ice Cream Parlour is her fourth novel.
