Today is my stop on the blog tour for Hunter’s Secret by Val Penny! Big thanks to Val for allowing me a copy of her book to review, and Rachel from Rachels Random Resources for inviting me to be a part of the tour!
Detective Inspector Hunter Wilson is called to the scene of a murder. DCs Tim Myerscough and Bear Zewedu found a corpse, but when Hunter arrives it has disappeared, and all is not as it seems.
Hunter recalls the disappearance of a dead body thirty years earlier. The Major Incident Team is called in but sees no connection – it is too long ago. Hunter is determined to investigate the past and the present with the benefit of modern DNA testing.
Tim has other problems in his life. His father, Sir Peter Myerscough, is released from jail. He, too, remembers the earlier murder. There is no love lost between Hunter and Sir Peter. Will Hunter accept help from his nemesis to catch a killer?
Hunter’s own secret is exciting and crucial to his future. Will it change his life? And can he keep Edinburgh safe?
I jumped at the chance to read this book – Being a proud Scot myself, I adore reading anything based in Scotland, especially my local city of Edinburgh! And a crime mystery fits in so well with this city and it’s historical streets.
This is my first DI Hunter book, despite it being the 5th in the series, but I found no problem at all picking up on who was who and catching up on some of the back stories of the characters. Just like a true reflection of Edinburgh, this book is full of a varied cast of characters from all walks of life; from the well-to-do trust fund kids to the slightly more rough around the edges sorts!
I was taken in by the story straight away – Murders, disappearing bodies and more suspects than you can shake a stick at. What starts as simple murder soon unravels into a tangled web of deception. Also, I absolutely loved the premise of tying the recent murder in with one of the past, with the detectives investigating the two timelines in tandem. It added extra depth to the whole thing and made for a gripping read.
I will definitely be going back to read the first 4 books in this series now to see what other escapades DI Hunter and his team get into!
