The Chocolate Box by Isabella May – Review

Today I am reviewing The Chocolate Box, the latest delicious read from the wonderfully talented Isabella May – Big thanks to Isabella for providing me with a copy of the book to review, and as always thanks to Rachel of Rachels Random Resources for inviting me to be a part of this blog tour!

Ellie Sanchez wants revenge. Spurned during her school days at prestigious Monty’s academy when she was plain Eleanor Finch, and played second fiddle to her idol, Barnaby Westwood, and his show-off sister, Clementine, Ellie will stop at nothing to turn the tables now she’s all grown up. The siblings and their snubbing have been the catalyst for everything that’s gone wrong in her life, from parental neglect to her divorce.

When the Westwood travel merchandise company advertises for a new HR manager, Ellie decides her unique combo of karma and Law of Attraction has finally come good. And she’ll be bagging herself a cherry-on-the-cake, second, and richer, husband in the process – once Barnaby sees how much she’s changed, anyway.

Fast forward two years and he STILL doesn’t recognise her!

Fast forward two years and the company is in a financial mess.

Last Chance Saloon-style, Ellie coerces the siblings and their older sister, Brooke (the perpetual spanner in her works) to a rustic gîte in Normandy for a spot of team-building… over a very ‘special’ box of artisan chocolates.

Cue ALL the fireworks in the cocoa bean version of Jumanji…

As with all of Isabella May’s books, this left me craving something sweet! Be sure to have snacks on hand before you crack open the cover of this latest offering, ideally chocolates but be careful which ones you choose! 😉

With a varied cast of characters, none of them are without their flaws. From the snobbish and spoilt Barnaby and Clementine, to Brooke, the naïve doormat, god bless her. Then we have Ellie. Where to start with Ellie? She was the main character I loved to hate! With her obsessive nature and willingness to do whatever it takes to get what she wants, she does come across as a little a lot crazy. The more of her backstory that comes to light, the more sense it makes, and I do warm to her, but it definitely doesn’t take away the crazy edge she has! (But hey, life would be boring if we didn’t have a little crazy in it, right?!)

Throughout the antics of the whole book, you just know it’s building up to something spectacular, but the question is, what? Short chapters are scattered throughout the book in the form of a journalist interviewing Jock & Julie, the owners of the gîte (Who are a fabulous eccentric couple, and come a close second as my favourite characters behind Brooke!) hinting at the disastrous aftermath that Ellie and co. have left behind them. It not only helps hint at what is to come, but also provides entertaining reading in itself as the couple are just the right level of strange to make the whole scenario rather humorous.

As always with May’s books, the descriptions of the food in question (This time round, chocolate of course!) is enough to set your mouth watering. Each chocolate from the more-sinister-than-it-seems box is described so vividly you can almost taste it. I don’t even know if the chocolatier the box came from is real or fictional, but I still want to visit their shop!!

Overall this was a brilliantly entertaining read, and I once again cannot wait to see what comes next from this wonderful author. This book is filled with delicious food, crazy schemes, a sexy chef, and jaw-dropping revelations throughout. It’s definitely not to be missed!

About The Author

Isabella May lives in (mostly) sunny Andalusia, Spain with her husband, daughter and son, creatively inspired by the mountains and the sea. Having grown up on Glastonbury’s ley lines however, she’s unable to completely shake off her spiritual inner child, and is a Law of Attraction fanatic, as well as a Pranic Healer.

After a degree in Modern Languages and European Studies at UWE, Bristol (and a year working abroad in Bordeaux and Stuttgart), Isabella bagged an extremely jammy and fascinating job in children’s publishing… selling foreign rights for novelty, board, pop-up and non-fiction books all over the world; in every language from Icelandic to Korean, Bahasa Indonesian to Papiamento!

All of which has fuelled her curiosity and love of international food and travel – both feature extensively in her cross-genre novels, fused with a dollop of romcom, and a sprinkle of magical realism.
